The year 2021 was a monumental year for numismatics as the US Mint changed the reverse design on the American Silver Eagle after 35 years of mintage. Type 1 American Silver Eagles feature John Mercanti’s legendary Heraldic Eagle reverse while Type 2 American Silver Eagles showcase acclaimed numismatic artist Emily Damstra and Michael Gaudioso’s Flying Eagle reverse. This set of two includes one example each of the Type 1 and Type 2 in Reverse Proof, showcasing both designs with distinct strikes. Together in their original government packaging, these are the final Type 1 and first Type 2 Reverse Proof issues. Coins with a Reverse Proof finish feature frosted fields and mirrored designs, the opposite of the standard proof. The US Mint has only struck Reverse Proof issue ASEs 6 times in over 35 years, making this a rare occurrence. Each coin in this set has a minuscule mintage of only 124,021 examples each, making them some of the lowest mintage Silver Eagles ever struck.
